Biden calls Cuba a ‘failed state’, communism ‘a universally failed system’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: US President Joe Biden said that Cuba is a “failed state” and communism a “failed system,” said CNN.

The US president made the comments last Thursday at a news conference along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Cuba is unfortunately a failed state and repressing their citizens. There are a number of things that we would consider doing to help the people of Cuba, but it would require a different circumstance or a guarantee that they would not be taken advantage of by the government,” Biden said.

“Communism is a failed system — a universally failed system. And I don’t see socialism as a very useful substitute,” Biden added.

Biden said that the United States is looking at ways to provide internet access to Cuba after the Cuban government shut down those services following widespread protests in the island nation.

Biden also said that the United States would send COVID-19 vaccines to Cuba, but that Cuba has not joined COVAX, the international vaccine coalition, through who the United States is channeling vaccine donations to other countries.

do it in a way that average citizens would have access to those vaccines,” Biden said.

Biden said that would be prepared to send vaccines to Cuba if he were assured that an international organization would administer them and that the vaccines would be administered to the average citizens.

Apart from clamoring for freedom, the protesters in Cuba kept saying that there was a scarcity of food and that they are not enough vaccines to control the pandemic which had gotten out of hand.

While Biden has not lifted sanctions imposed by Trump that strengthened the US embargo on Cuba, he said the United States would not consider allowing US to Cuba remittances, that is Americans sending money through banks to their Cuban relatives because the Cuban government might confiscate the funds.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called on Biden to remove the sanctions impose by Trump.

“If President Joe Biden really had humanitarian concerns for the Cuban people he would eliminate the 243 measures applied by President Donald Trump, including 50 imposed cruelly during the pandemic,” Diaz-Canel said on Twitter on Friday.

Díaz -Canel said the US had wasted millions of dollars and had not been able to destroy Cuba.
