By BBN Staff: A growing number of patients who received care at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital over the past few months are coming forward to complain about exorbitant fees being charged for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used by medical staff when delivering service.

BBN has obtained copies of bills charged to patients showing that they are charged $200 for each PPE used while receiving care. One patient was charged almost $2,000 for PPE’s, a separate cost from the bill issued for services rendered.

Some patients have complained that the $200 charge is unfair because the KHMH received those PPE free of cost through donations from international agencies and other donors. Other patients have alleged that, while each patient is charged a fee for the use of the PPE, there have been instances where the medical staff has used the same PPE to administer care to multiple patients.

In response to the complaints, the KHMH Authority said that the matter is under review and that the cost per unit will be adjusted in the “near future.” The hospital authority also pointed out that not all PPE’s were obtained via donation.

This is a developing story.
