By BBN Staff: Placencia and San Pedro have long been magnets for expatriates to Belize, but they’re not the only desirable locations. Some expatriates and retirees have discovered the joys of living in Belize’s Cayo District. Here are the top three reasons Cayo has become a favorite destination.

1. It’s Affordable and Has Everything You Need

While there are still deals in Belize, the popular areas of Placencia, San Pedro and Corozal have gone up in price considerably. These areas have many amenities and great scenery, but they’re also busy, crowded and somewhat overpriced.

Cayo, as locals call it, offers all the same benefits and conveniences. It’s close to shopping, dining, businesses, major destinations, and an airport. You can live well for a lot less in this lovely area. In addition, you can find all the amenities you need in the walkable capital of San Ignacio, and its twin town Santa Elena.

2. It Has Gorgeous, Lush Scenery

While Cayo does not have beaches, it has its own impressive scenery. It’s ringed by the verdant Maya mountains on one side and citrus farms on the other. Maya ruins dot the landscape of evergreen forests, lush jungles, rivers, lagoons, and waterfalls.

Cayo is also the center of Belize’s eco-tourism industry. It is a lively area where you can find hiking, swimming, fishing, cave adventures, and Maya ruins to explore.

San Ignacio is just an hour away from Belmopan, Belize’s capital city. Some of Belize’s Mennonite communities are in the Cayo District as well. Their well-tended farms and agricultural products are some highlights of life in this region. You’ll find everything you need close at hand.

3. It’s a Safe Area and Real Estate Is Still Affordable, Especially at Carmelita Gardens

Cayo is a safe area that’s a little off the beaten path. You can still find great deals on homes here.

One of the nicest new areas is Carmelita Gardens. On the meandering Belize River, this off-grid community offers a relaxed, sustainable lifestyle that welcomes newcomers. Affordably priced lots and home plans add to the value of this 100% self-sufficient development.

Plan a visit to Carmelita Gardens when you’re touring potential places to live. You can stay at a guest cottage for a few days to relax and look around. If you enjoy your stay, talk to the property management about buying a home here.
