Government stiffens penalties for contraband and border jumping

Posted: Thursday, August 6, 2020. 9:16 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Those found jumping the borders, which officially remains closed, now face stiffer penalties, as do those doing business with them.

In the first instance, six months in jail is the penalty if found jumping the border, or procuring contraband, or buying contraband from border jumpers.

A second offence carries one year imprisonment and the Government will go back to the House of Representatives to ensure that they are fined three times the value of the goods.

The Attorney General reiterated that Belize more or less had a handle on the pandemic until border jumping took hold and caused the current jump in cases.
