PUP blasts GOB for proposed hike in electricity rates!

y BBN Staff:The Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) today issued a statement condemning a proposed hike in electricity rates.

According to the statement, government-controlled Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) announced that if approved, the cost of electricity will increase effective January 1, 2019.

According to the PUP, it views this as, “a shameful act of duplicity on the part of both the Government of Belize and BEL.”

The statement points out that just months ago BEL had increased its rates by 6.24 per cent. This rate according to the PUP, was to have remained effect for two years.

“Belizeans have been forced to pay more in electricity bills in the past year, not only because of the increase in the cost per kilowatt hour, but because in 2018, GOB lowered the tax-threshold on electricity bills,” said the statement.

The PUP maintains that this is unfair given the already high cost of living. The PUP went on to suggest that on one hand the Government of Belize is offering each Minister $25,000 for Christmas Cheer but on the other hand it is recovering those monies through taxes.

“The PUP calls on the Government of Belize to explore cost-cutting measures both in its own operations and in outlandish expenditures before trying to tax Belizeans once again,” the statement concluded.
