Police officer requests court action against colleague

BBN Staff: Last week Thursday, May 24, 2018, it was alleged that PC Leonard Benjamin attached to the San Ignacio police station threatened his colleague with his gun on the steps of the station.

Sources told BBN that the misunderstanding was as a result of a relationship with a female police officer also attached to the San Ignacio police formation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvette informed today that the police officer who was threatened with a gun initially agreed to settle the matter internally, however, he has now requested court action.

Benjamin has been charged and disciplined by the Belize Police Department.

Reports also indicate that immediately after the incident, Benjamin was transferred to another police station.

The file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for revision.

Reporters today asked Myvette why Benajmin had not been charged or remanded to prison since in a previous and recent case among police officers, police constable Hector Esquivel did not request court action after the stabbing incident of his common-law wife, Corporal Audrey Moody but was swiftly charged and remanded to the Belize Central Prison. Myvette informed reporters that there was no specific difference or preference in any of the cases.
