“Pawpa” Mena to offer Mason money “for charitable purposes”

Posted: Thursday, July 21, 2016. 4:08 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Dangriga area representative and Minister of State for the Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities Honorable Frank Papa Mena has announced that he will place the 10 thousand dollars he received as a political campaign contribution from now-accused murderer William “Danny” Mason into an escrow account to be used for charitable purposes.

In a press release issued today from his office, Mena, who first won his seat in a by-election a year ago at which time he was challenged by the late Pastor Llewellyn Lucas, says he was first introduced to Mason, who claimed to be a businessman, through former PUP Stann Creek West area representative and former CEO of Citrus Products of Belize Limited, Dr. Henry Canton, at which time he had expressed interest in the Commerce Bight Port. This took place about 18 months ago.

The future area representative was taken to Mason’s house by colleague Minister John Saldivar before the by-election.

Mena states that, quote, At no time did I promise to offer any special services or access by virtue of my position to Mr. Mason. End quote. He adds that, quote, when I accepted this campaign contribution, I had no reason to believe that Mr. Mason was who he is now known to be. End quote.

Describing the recent events as “horrendous…deeply troubling to me, my family and all Belizeans,” the area rep closes the statement by extending condolences to the family of his fallen former rival.
