Government will pursue Guatemalan military over grounding

Posted: Thursday, June 11, 2015. 8:41 pm CST.

Thursday, June 11th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: While Venezuela’s military vessels were invited to Belizean waters, two Guatemalan Coast Guard vessels strayed inside Belizean territory while transiting to Mexico.

One of them ran aground on the Belize Barrier Reef in the Glover’s Reef atoll southeast of Belize City. Belizean officials are on the ground assessing damages and according to CEO in the Ministry of National Security, the likelihood is that the matter will be pursued for monetary damages for destruction of a precious natural resource.

But, he says, there must first be a proper investigation. Lovell told us that depending on the outcome of the investigation, lead official personnel on the vessel are being held.

Investigations continue at this hour.
