By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Bomba United Farmers Cooperative will hold Onion Field Day on Wednesday, April 19, in Bomba in the Belize District.

The Bomba United Farmers Cooperative have been involved in an experiment in which they planted different varieties of onions. During this Field Day in April, the Bomba United Farmers Cooperative Society Limited will showcase 25 different varieties of onions that they have harvested.

According to the Bomba United Farmers Cooperative chairman Reynaldo Orellana, they have been cultivating onions over the last 18 years and have been planting ten different varieties.  He said in December 2022 they planted 15 other varieties brought in by seed suppliers for them to conduct the onion experiment.

Orellana said he is satisfied with how the experiment is working up to now.

“We are doing research so that the farmers know which varieties are better and what varieties of seeds are to buy,” Orellana said, pointing out that not all varieties of onions work at sea level.

“From the new varieties probably ten to 12 varieties, it seems, are going to work in this area,” Orellana said, explaining that some of the varieties were brought in for the first time by the seed suppliers.

“Out of the 25 approximately 22 varieties can be recommended in this country.

So, out of all these, which ones are the best?

“In white we have the best one is named Blanca Grande (big White), in purple we have the Red Star, and for the yellow varieties we have Raider,” Orellana said.

Orellana said during the April 19 Onion Field Day members of Bomba United Farmers Cooperative and the seed importers will make presentations on the different varieties and the cultivation factors that should be taken into consideration such as plant management and soil analysis.

According to Orellana, they have been working closely with four seed suppliers, namely Agro Vet Giron, Semillas Raul, Agri Prec, and Seed Agents Agro Suppliers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Cooperatives department who have been following the experiment closely will be in attendance.
