Fitness Association to COVID-19 Oversight Committee: “How important is the health and fitness of Belizeans?”

Posted: Wednesday, October 28, 2020. 6:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: This week, the National COVID-19 Oversight Committee (NOC) took the decision to keep gymnasiums closed until November 30, due to a recent spike in the number of positive cases; a decision that has not been well received by the National Fitness Association (NFA).

The NFA issued a strongly-worded release today, stressing the point that the NOC’s decision places an unfair burden on gyms, which have not been at the center of any positive COVID-19 case.

” The one-month additional wait period is arbitrary and points to an uncertain and likely decision to keep gyms and fitness facilities closed indefinitely and making them illegal businesses without justification. We ask “What do the NOC and DHS expect to happen in a mere month?” “Would the virus just magically disappears and active cases cease to exist?” the NFA said.

The association notes that it had a detailed proposal for the safe reopening of gyms countrywide, which included the participation of various government entities such as the Economic Development Council, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Local Government, and the Central Building Authority. The NFA pointed out that gyms are being held to a level of scrutiny that is not being applied to other sectors, which could actually prove to cause greater infection risks.

“… there is little to no oversight with other high occupancy industries, such as public transportation, dry-good stores (supermarkets), medical facilities and the like where the risks are much greater yet no proper regulation is enforced “to protect us,” the NFA added.

The organization is calling on the NOC to reassess its decision taking into account the fact that the health and fitness sector is actually a partner in the national response to COVID-19, by giving people the opportunity to enhance their health which will put them in a better position to combat and survive a possible COVID-19 infection.
