Man who smuggled people through Belize jailed in the US

By BBN Staff: A 61-year-old Indian man has been jailed in the United States today, after pleading guilty to smuggling people from other countries into the US.

According to the US Department of Justice, Yadvinder Singh Sandhu pleaded guilty to assisting around 400 aliens to unlawfully enter the US between 2013 and 2015.

Sandhu and others made flight arrangements for the foreign nationals to travel from India through other countries, including Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Iran, Panama, Venezuela, Belize, and Haiti–to the Dominican Republic. They would house the illegal immigrants in the Dominican Republic before transporting them to Florida or Puerto Rico by boat.

Sandhu was sentenced to five years in prison. The incident adds to a growing list of human smuggling cases where Belize is cited as one of the transshipment points. Earlier in April, Belizean authorities busted 18 illegal immigrants moving through Belize bound for the US.
